The Municipal Authority lost a dedicated member when Todd A. Krehlik, 47, died on August 25, 2011.  He was a lifelong resident of our community.  Todd was appointed to our board in 2007 by the Derry Borough Council and was in the last year of his first term. He started his tenure with the Authority as the assistant Secretary/Treasurer and was serving as Board Chairman at the time of his death. Todd was also a past president of the Derry Borough Council and active in several community organizations.  He is survived by his wife, Rachelle and two sons, both at home and two daughters living in the area.  Funeral arrangements were made by the Lopatich Funeral Home in Latrobe with internment in Unity Cemetery.

Did you know that the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Derry is now responsible for the Storm Drains in town?

When it rains, storm water flows over driveways, lawns, streets, and sidewalks, and into storm drains that discharge directly to our streams, lakes, rivers and the ocean with no treatment.

As the storm water flows along the ground, it picks up oil, trash, chemicals, dirt and other pollutants and discharges these pollutants directly into our water-bodies, the same water-bodies that we use for swimming, fishing, and providing drinking water.

By practicing healthy habits, citizens can help keep common pollutants like trash, yard waste, pet waste, pesticides, chemicals and automotive fluids off the ground and out of our storm water.

From the USEPA, here area few things you can do to prevent storm water pollution:

1. Use fertilizers sparingly and sweep up driveways, sidewalks, and roads.

2. Never dump anything down the storm drains.

3. Vegetate bare spots in your yard.

4. Compost your yard waste.

5. Avoid pesticides; learn about Integrates Pest Management.

6. Direct downspouts away from paved surfaces.

7. Take your car to the car wash instead of washing it in the driveway.

8. Check car for leaks, and recycle motor oil.

9. Pick up after your pet.

Derry Municipal Authority to take over the Borough Sewage Treatment Plant.

It was announced by Derry Borough council that ordnance number 573 has passed and the Sewage plant and all the collection system will become property of the Authority.  It is expected that the merger of the two departments will save the residents of Derry a substantial amount of money.  The Administration of the department will be transferred as well as all assets and liabilities.  The transfer is to take place over a period of several months.

The Solicitor for the Authority has established a priority list of tasks to accomplish in order to have an orderly transition.  It was announced that the first task is employee transfer.  The legal team will be working with two unions.  Currently the Authority employees are represented by Teamsters local 30.  Concerns of seniority and benefits will be addressed.

Customers of the Authority will not see much difference in the way they receive bills and service from the Authority.  Customers in Derry Borough already received their water and sewage bills from the office located at 620 N. Chestnut Street.

After the initial transfer of employees, the team will address the asset transfer as well as the payments of the recent loans associated with two major rehabilitation sewage projects in Derry Borough.  The third street culvert project and the Fourth ward storm sewer separation project which was financed the Pennsylvania agency PENNVEST.

The Authority Board of Directors likewise passed a motion to accept the sewage department at its January regular meeting. Manager Rich Thomas stated that this merger of the two departments will strengthen the Authority and establish for the residence of Derry Borough the necessary management team to face the ever increasing stringent regulations facing all Municipal entities.
